Weekend Warrior Weekend - Reloaded

The second instalment of the weekend warrior weekend series drew a huge crowd to the slopes of Mt Borah. The weather tried to dampen the enthusiastic spirits of the attending pilots but the rainy skies on Friday cleared up overnight to give a foggy but clearing morning Saturday. By 10:00 it was clear and looking great. A task was set with one turn point in Manilla followed by goal at Halls Creek. Good cloud cover made the first half of the day relatively easy if you could get away from the hill, but the good sky didn't last with conditions weakening and turning progressively blue after 13:30h.

It was great fun flying with so many pilots present and covering some good XC distances. One first time pilot to inland flying even made goal. Unfortunately a landing accident requiring helicopter evac occurred so the task was abandoned. The pilot is recovering and will hopefully make a full recovery in time.

Sunday morning looked like a repeat of Saturday with nice blue skies, however the wind didn't co operate and it was blown out by 9:00. The day was officially cancelled at the morning breifing and most pilots took the chance for a daytime drive home and departed early.

The nighttime entertainment was excellent with a movie festival on the friday night at vic and toms Royal Hotel, and a party saturday night in the clubhouse.

Thanks to James and Che for organising such a great weekend.

An official event report will follow sometime in the future.

Blackheath 29 MAR 08

A few pilots turned up to fly on what looked like a great day at Blackheath. A nice WNW wind was blowing in, with cloud streets already formed heading across the valley to the west. Unfortunately a crowd turned up for a wedding and invaded the launch, stopping operations for over an hour. After a late launch all four PG and the one HG present climbed up to base at around 2200m. I headed into wind along a nice cloud street. Progress was good with a ground speed of about 20Km/h. However after nearly reaching the cox's river road in the middle of the valley, a large Cu over Wallerawang shaded out the valley and killed off any thermals that were poking through from the valley. With the headwind i was never going to be able to glide to the other side of the valley and the next lift so i turned tail and ran back towards the sun and Blackheath. The shadow caught up too quickly for me and i landed in the middle of the valley in the little gap. A long walk back without a retrieve, but a friendly farmer gave us a ride part of the way.

Later in the afternoon the clouds dissapeared and the cool afternoon made for a perfect glass off. We ridge soared till dark, able to cross over to the spur north of Hargreaves lookout and back. landing in still air just after sunset we were glad we had a car down and didn't have to walk back to the cars at the top.

Wet Rain today
The weather was great today. It was pouring all day long. I was soaked on my way home. It looks like raining for a while here in sydney so there might not be much flying for a while to come yet and it is all really because the school kids have started back. It always rains as soon as school is back.
